St Magnus
St. Magnus
We arrived in Kirkwall, Orkney Islands, Scotland the next morning.  The most impressive building is the St. Magnus Cathedral.  It is the largest cathedral in northern Scotland and was constructed beginning in 1137.  It is still a parish church of the Scottish National Church.
The Church has been added onto over the centuries and even contains its own dungeon.  It still stands out as the biggest structure in town and is a good example of Norse architecture.

In back of a local museum in Kirkwall, mom found a nice English garden. In spite of the chilly weather, (notice mom's summer wardrobe) the garden is vibrant with color.
Mom admires the ring of flowers set up almost like a clock. All this is hidden behind the buildings on the main street.

Mom is looking at the town hall which is the building with the small turrets in front.
When we got up close to the building you could see the figures over the door way.  They have been guarding the entrance for centuries and are much cheaper than live guards.
