Mom is waiting to get back on the bus.  Notice the fencing.  On top of the cut volcanic lava is a layer of turf, which slopes to the ground.  This construction seems to be found throughout the viking lands and even into the viking settlement in Newfoundland.
Our next stop was for lunch at a restaurant where they cook with steam - from the ground.  Here is a selection of food on the outdoor cookery.  The steam is also used to warm the green houses and produce a number of fresh fruits and vegetables.

The sign shows the specialties of the house in Icelandic and English.
It was a nice little restaurant and we had a good meal there, including salad from the steam run green houses.

Fortified with a good lunch, dad walked through steaming fields while mom watched from a respectful distance.
All you had to do is watch out that you did not fall into a new steam caused sink hole.
