This is another view of the pit house or pit room.  The hole at the back is a ventilation shaft. This type of housing was used from about 550 to 750 AD. 
After 750, the Indians began to build houses above ground.  All of these buildings were on top of the Mesa.

By about 1000 they had started to build houses of stone and masonry.
This is a view of the base of a masonry home.

This is a view of a Kiva which is a Hopi word for a ceremonial or religious service room.  There are benches around the circumference.
The large hole is for ventilation purposes and the entrance and exit was from a hole in the roof.
