The Kiva could also be used for weaving and other activities. There is a small hole in the floor which is the way to the underworld.
In the period from 1190 to 1270 or so the Indians moved back to the caves or shelters in the cliffs, where they built elaborate housing.

In the sheltered sections of the cliffs, the ancestral puebloans constructed apartment type housing several stories high. 
Each family had several rooms and could build more as required.

These dwellings were found in many of the cliffs below the
mesa where they had their farm plots.
