There were many cliff dwellings to be seen in the cliffs below the mesa. Some were small like this
and some were large as the one above which looks big enough to house a small town of people.

Mom carefully explained the water situation to one of the group.  They could get water from the stream below or from catch basins that they built on the mesa to catch rain and snow melt.
This sign explains some of the water resources.  The people left this area in the late 1200s for some unexplained reason, although the lack of water could have been a contributing cause.

The old couple posed against the cliffs, careful not to block any of the cliff houses.
