The story of Ms. Hemenway is told on the marker by the road side.
The next day it was time for our train ride from Durango to Silverton on a vintage narrow gauge railway.  As we started out we could see the fields and mountains as we left the town of Durango.

These trains were vintage - made out of wood and no heat. The temperature was close to 32 deg and we were going uphill all the way to even colder temperatures.
The train cars by the way were no problem to us as we were confident that we would make the trip without incident.

The track size was narrow
and on a curve you could see the engine from the window as it faithfully chugged its way up the incline.
