The next day we left Grand
Junction on I70 in the direction of Denver. The hills were
somewhat similar to those in southern Colorado but there was much more
vegetation on them.
|
We stopped by a river which had
lots of vegetation even though we were at high elevations - between one
and two miles above sea level.

|

|
The highway which can be seen in
the background is elevated like the roads in New York City. The
elevation of the road allows for free passage of wild animals and
allows the road to be fit into rather narrow spaces.
|
There was no snow here but it
was quite chilly as you can see from the way mom is dressed. Shortly
after getting back onto the road we went through a tunnel that was
about 2 miles high - probably one of the highest tunnels in the world.

 |

|
We then stopped at Vail,
CO. We were between summer and winter, so many of the stores were
closed and mom had to wander a distance to find the stores that were
open.
|
Then half the shops were under
repair or reconstruction so that further limited the shopping area. The
town is designed very much like a Swiss mountain town. We got there
before the snow, but as we found out later, the snow was right behind
us.
